At Natural Balance Physiotherapy, our team of experienced chartered physiotherapists believe in a simple but powerful truth: positive change is possible at any stage of life.

A recent feature in Women’s Health UK told the story of an 82-year-old woman living with osteoporosis who could walk for only half a minute without stopping. Rhoda had significant muscle loss in her back due to the osteoporosis yet, after starting a safe, structured strength-training programme, her posture improved, her stamina increased, and she regained the confidence to walk steadily and independently - all in just six months.

By adopting a sustained weight-training regime, Rhoda undertook bench pressing, deadlifting and squatting exercises – and now aims to walk upright again and for longer periods of time. We have no doubt she will do it!

We see transformations like this in our clinics every week. The human body has a remarkable ability to adapt and get stronger, even in later life, when it’s given the right care, guidance, and encouragement. We aim to help all our patients become more robust, resilient, confident, capable and self-reliant – and no two programmes are the same – just as no two people are the same.

The evidence for strength training in older adults

Strength training is one of the most effective ways to maintain health and independence as we age. It can:

  • Preserve and rebuild muscle mass and tone

  • Improve bone density, posture, and joint stability

  • Increase balance and coordination

  • Support everyday independence and confidence in movement.

The NHS advises adults over 65 to include strength, balance, and flexibility exercises at least twice per week, alongside moderate aerobic activity. Working with a chartered physiotherapist offers a safe and tailored way to meet these goals.

How we support change here at Natural Balance Physiotherapy

Whether you’re looking for rehabilitation physiotherapy after an injury, strength training for older adults, or support to improve capability, mobility and everyday function, we design programmes to suit your needs. Our approach includes:

  • Comprehensive Assessment – We start by reviewing your circumstances and mobility, pain levels, and medical history to create a safe, effective plan to help you understand your problems, dispel any worries and demonstrate what really is possible, given time.

  • Gradual, Sustainable Progression – We introduce programmes at the right pace, building strength without overloading joints or muscles and aiding with lifestyle choices to work with you so that you trust us and our processes.

  • Meaningful, Measurable Outcomes – Our clients often notice they can climb stairs more easily, get up from a chair with less effort, or walk further without discomfort - small changes that make a big difference. We support you over the short and long term and track your progress so you can see these changes for yourself.

Transform your life

The story of Rhoda’s transformation reinforces what we believe: with the right plan, encouragement, and professional support, it’s never too late to regain strength, mobility, and independence.

If you’re in Wrexham, Chester, the Wirral or North East Wales and want to explore the benefits of tailored physiotherapy – and improve your quality of life - we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
