Balance Isn’t Something You Lose – It’s Something You Can Train

As we get older, there is often an assumption that losing a little balance is simply part of ageing. Perhaps you feel slightly less steady when stepping off a kerb, standing on one leg to put your trousers on, walking across uneven ground or getting up quickly from a chair. It can be tempting to think, “That’s just getting older.”

But balance is not something you simply 'have' or 'lose'. Like strength, mobility and cardiovascular fitness, it is something you can continue to develop and maintain throughout your life, at whatever age.

Here at Natural Balance Physiotherapy, we often talk about building capability rather than putting limitations around what you can do. Balance is a great example of this. Your ability to stay steady depends on a combination of strength, coordination, vision, joint mobility and the way your brain responds to information from your body and surroundings. It is a whole-body skill.

That is why balance exercises do not necessarily need to look like standing on one leg in a physiotherapy clinic! Walking, changing direction, stepping over obstacles, getting up and down from a chair, climbing stairs and strengthening the muscles around your hips, knees and ankles all contribute to how confidently you move.

The important thing is to keep challenging your body appropriately. If everything you do is comfortable and predictable, your body has little reason to adapt, so introducing small, controlled challenges can help maintain the strength and coordination needed for everyday movement.

This becomes particularly relevant as we move through autumn and winter. Uneven paths, wet leaves, slippery surfaces and reduced daylight can all make everyday movement a little more demanding. That does not mean avoiding those situations or becoming less active. In many cases, it is a reason to make sure your body is prepared for them.

And balance is not only about older adults. Athletes need it; runners need it; cyclists need it. In fact, anyone who plays sport, walks on uneven ground, enjoys the gym or simply wants to remain active and independent needs a body that can respond when things do not go quite according to plan. And that means most of us.

At Natural Balance, we believe that positive change is possible at every stage of life. If you have noticed a change in your balance, strength or confidence when moving, it is worth understanding why rather than simply accepting it as something you have to live with.

Sometimes a relatively small change in strength, mobility or movement strategy can make a significant difference to what your body feels capable of doing.

The goal is not to move less because you are getting older. It is to keep your body strong, adaptable and ready for whatever life asks of it next.

Your age is not a barrier to becoming stronger, more capable and more confident in your movement.
