Physiotherapy FAQs - your most frequently asked questions

Our team of chartered physiotherapists here at Natural Balance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury are used to hearing many common questions about physiotherapy. But some questions are asked more frequently than others. Here are just a few:

Will it hurt?

The answer to this question is not as easy as yes or no. Your body may be in pain already through an injury or painful condition. In these circumstances, physiotherapy may be difficult and you may feel sore after some treatment. However, ultimately, physiotherapy is a safe and effective treatment process and that is just what it is – a process. This means that you should find your body responding to the techniques we show you which will ultimately, help you reach your goal of pain-free, healthier living.

How long will my appointment be?

Your appointment with a chartered physiotherapist will last 45 minutes and we will devise a programme of treatments that will enable you to continue your treatment from home or your workplace.

What happens after my first appointment?

The team at Natural Balance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury will demonstrate and guide you through a range of exercises that are designed to help reduce pain and promote recovery. You will be shown how to continue these exercises at home and we may arrange a follow-up appointment to assess initial progress.

What should I wear?

We want you to be as comfortable as possible during your appointment. Loose clothing also enables the chartered physiotherapist to assess and treat the problem area easily. Gym clothes or shorts are usually helpful. The therapist will then explain the areas that need to be exposed during the appointment and any clothing that may, if necessary, need to be removed in order for the assessment to take place effectively.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You may request an appointment with a physiotherapist without a referral from your GP. However, we are strong advocates of working with other professionals in the healthcare industry and we would encourage communication between your GP and ourselves in order to benefit you. We will only contact your GP with your consent.

Can you refer me a specialist or do I need to be referred via my GP?

Yes, our team of chartered physiotherapists can refer you to a specialist if we feel that their opinion would be beneficial to you and your condition. We may suggest X-rays, for example, or MRI scans, blood tests etc. This will be discussed with you prior to any communication between a specialist and ourselves and will only be done with your consent.

At Natural Balance Physiotherapy & Sports Injury, we are here to help you achieve your goals. If you have any questions or need further information prior to booking your initial consultation, or at any time during your treatment programme, please do not hesitate to call us on 01244 639898 or email lorna@natbalance.co.uk for more help. Chaperones are more than welcome.
